A MOVE LIKE NO OTHER
BY STACIA S.
As a full-time behavioral therapist and a single mother of a 3½ year old, my days are full. The thought of managing a move took my stress to another level. In an effort to realize my goal of becoming a homeowner by the summer of 2013, I decided to downsize and reduce my living expenses. This required that I move out of my rented home and into a smaller apartment. Oh…where to begin? My mom, understanding what is involved in making a move less stressful, brought over the SOCS Crew. They arrived 2 weeks before my scheduled moving date, made an assessment and devised a plan involving sorting, eliminating, packing and unpacking. They thought of everything and made several suggestions that would not only save me tons of money, but put a little extra in my pocket.
First: We sorted each room, each drawer and shelf and made several trips to Goodwill and a local consignment shop. Rather than spend days on end with these tasks, we managed to break each room down to what they kindly referred to as “right sized” contents.
Second: Two days before the move the SOCS Crew came over and packed my office and items in the kitchen that I wouldn’t need until after the move. The day before my move we packed up the bathroom, my bedroom and the living room – photos, pictures, clothing, etc….
Third: The day of the move the SOCS gals, who I lovingly refer to as my “Rescue Team”, arrived just as the movers pulled in. We reviewed the moving plans and one of the gals communicated who, what and where to the movers. The movers truly appreciated the thought and organization that went into my moving strategy. They busily got to work.
Forth: Everything I own has been moved to my new apartment. Boxes had been labeled in advance so the movers knew exactly where to place them. One of the SOCS gals stayed at my prior residence to oversee the move, the other two waited at my new apartment to begin unpacking.
My New Home: Spending the first night with my daughter in our new apartment was a completely different experience than I had anticipated before the SOCS Crew came to help. I had planned to be up the entire night unpacking. I’m thrilled to say that was not the case. Everything was neatly organized and in place.
I can’t express the relief and gratitude that I feel toward the SOCS Crew for making what could have been an exhausting and unpleasant experience into a stress free move and an exciting new start. Now, when I reach my goal of home ownership next summer you can bet the SOCS Crew will be by my side.
